A day in the life of a track rider, behind the glitz and glam of race day. Tessa is both a Clerk Of The Course on race days and a morning track-rider at Randwick Racecourse. This piece is about the hard mornings, the difficulties faced at this job and most importantly a love for horses.

#1736 Word Travels Fast

A new series from All The Best and Word Travels, premiered right here.

Tegan Nicholls in on a quest across NSW, meeting young slam poets at the crossroads of race, access and recognition. From small country towns to beachside writer’s festivals, Tegan road trips across the state recording stories, rehearsals and conversations all leading up to one big moment: the National Slam Finals at the Sydney Opera House.

But this series isn’t about winners and losers, it’s about what it’s like to be a dream-big poet in small-town Australia.

Episode 1: ‘All performance poetry is doggerel’

In a guesthouse in Byron Bay, the crew overhear an interstate festival director declaring Slam poets aren’t real writers… and that their work is “shit”. It’s the first day of the Slam heats and questions around the legitimacy of their art hang heavy over the poets’ heads.

This episode was made by Tegan Nicholls, with additional editorial support from Miles Merrill and Selena Shannon. It features Slam champions Zohab Kahn and Arielle Cottingham, and the founder of the Australian Poetry Slam movement, Miles Merrill.

The remaining five episodes will be published online in November – keep an ear out!

#1735 Assumptions

A first impression can kill a job interview, delight a first date or… let’s face it, be the product of racism.

This week, stories of assumptions that range from an awkward misunderstanding, to a world in the violent throws of political division.

‘I’m Sorry’ by Joseph Aklilu

Whether this story feels alien, or painfully familiar, will say a lot about your experiences of Australia. All the scenarios depicted in this piece are based on real events in Melbourne and covered by the media.

Music: ‘Wanna remind you’ by Dizzy Wright
Credits: Luisa Cavelieri , Maddy Macfarlane , Tom Hirini , Josh Travaraus

‘Idiosyncratic marks’ by Alice Moldovan

Charlottesville, Virginia, August 2017. A group of neo-Nazis rallying by firelight is terrifying to see on your Facebook feed. But we’re probably fine in Australia, right? They’re just a bunch of outcast idiots on the other side of the world.

But Alice Moldovan can’t stop shaking, and she’s not the only one. This story is about when assumptions are made about a whole people, and the ripple effects across the world.
